Punta Prima

Cala Santa Galdana

But adults will delight in the natural beauty that surrounds Cala Galdana.

Son Bou

Yacht Charter Trips in Menorca

Yacht charter is quickly gaining popularity in many areas, as travelers look to escape the traditional touristy beaches, and get that one bit further into the world of relaxation and true escape. We looked at Yacht Charter trips and Yacht / Boat hires in Menorca, and discovered that it is truly a sailor's paradise.

As the northern most Balearic Island, the coastline is beautiful, lined with clear water coves and the whitest of beaches. With the nearest main city being 150 miles away, Barcelona, the yacht can be a true experience of relaxation. We decided on a weekly yacht charter trip, which gave us ample time to discover the island.

During the first couple of days, we anchored in various sea covers and took many a swims in the warm water. We worked on sun tans, and unwinded properly. Later on in the week we decided to get energetic and eager to see what awaits deep within the Mediterranean Sea. Diving and Snorkeling packages are included on Many yacht charter, and this was no exception. We could see the colorful fish that swim around the boat, we'd love to capture moments with a sort of underwater camera. Finally, we ended the penultimate day with a session to get a Menorca 's picturesque cliffs.

All around him was the right combination of rest, relaxation and exploration. The yacht features snorkeling equipment can be used for disposal, but also so that a fullqualified private diving instructor (PADI) is there for deep sea diving. Sail for a couple of hours and you're bound to find a new location to explore.

However they do keep you informed on weather conditions and any changes that may be necessary. The weather is usually a sure shot, as the sun is abundant. Temperatures range from 15 degrees Celsius in winter to 20-25 in the spring and autumn, while touching 30 in the summer. Menorcan horses are renowned as one of the finest breeds in the world. Tall, slender and entirely black in colouring, they are vigorously trained and disciplined to an exacting standard. According to local tradition, the horses were considered vital to the security of the vulnerable island in the 14th century - riders were stationed along the coastline, ready to report as soon as they saw an enemy sail. They were bred for speed and agility to cover the rocky ground of the island at pace, and this process has continued over the years to produce some truly magnificent animals. 

Today, they are most famous for the spectacle they provide at the various fiestas of Menorca, where they lead parades doing their signature trick - standing and walking on their hind legs. These fiestas are the best time to see the horses at work on a holiday in Menorca, through various horse shows at held throughout the island every week (such as at Club Escola Menorquina).

Horse Riding for Visitors

If you aren't content with watching the horses on your holiday to Menorca, there are plenty of opportunities to ride them yourself, no matter what your level of experience. Walking in Unspoilt Menorca

The Cami De Cavalls is a medieval coastal path which winds around the edge of Menorca. Historically, it was used to spread news of any impending invasions during Menorca's turbulent past. The path has in the past been trodden by Moorish, Catalan, French and English occupying forces, but can now be strolled through at a more leisurely pace on a Menorca holiday.

The path is 35 miles in diameter, but the walk can be enjoyed in stages whilst on your Menorca holidays. Most commonly it is attempted over five days in six mile sections, but you can choose whether you wish to attempt the entire walk or simply a small section of the walk. Riding the path is an alternative option, and certainly a very fitting way to experience the 'path of the horses'. Although the path doesn't follow the traditional route, due to developments over the centuries, it does stretch along the scenic coastline which is beautifully peppered with small inlets and coves. But whilst you're certain to enjoy the breathtaking scenery on your Menorca holiday, you may be surprised to hear that when this path was first built in the 16th century it was largely avoided by the local population.

Stories of invasion, pirates and the fear of disease from mainland Europe meant that many Menorcans feared, and therefore avoided the coastal areas of the island and many locals lived without ever seeing the sea. However, it would be a complete shame if you avoided the ocean areas whilst on your Menorca holidays. But although the stunning coves and deserted beaches provide a scenic accompaniment to your walk, they are not the only landscape that you are guaranteed to spot on your Menorca holidays. By turning a corner on your walk you are likely to come face to face with a huge Megalith. These Stone Age monuments are similar to Stonehenge and bronze remains of ancient Egyptian gods have even been discovered in the area. Some of the caves along the 'Cami De Cavalls' date from Neolithic times and are a testament to the historic past of this Balearic Island.

The best time to walk the Cami De Cavalls is in the spring, when the flowers are just beginning to bloom. From the common mallow to the blue flowers of the borage plant, Menorca's flora is certainly brightly-coloured and beautiful to stroll alongside on a clear spring day.

You can start the walk on your Menorca holidays at the popular resort of Son Bou and the first stage is to the area of Cala Galdana. However, if you only plan to do one stage of the trail on your Menorca holidays then we recommend that you start at Es Grau, which is easily the most scenic part of the Cami. The road takes in the lighthouse at Favaritx and continues through Punta Prima, ending in the scenic location of Mahon's harbour where, if you time it just right, you can finish just in time for sunset and sangria.

Does Menorca "Die" in November?

The season in Menorca is regarded as short with facilities closing down from the end of September. Last October when we were in Menorca resorts such as Son Bou had already seen many of its supermarkets closed by early October and many shops in the process of winding down for closure the rest of the month.

So does Menorca "die" in November, definitely not. The population may shrink to a third of its summer peak but the Island is still enjoying up to five hours of sunshine a day and temperatures still reach a respectable mid teens.

The Walkers still Walk, the Golfers revel in the mild conditions, which contrast Starkly with the UK in November. Painting holidays benefit from the now green countryside, which unlike its sister islands, now resembles the home counties with crops in the fields alongside cows, sheep and goats enclosed by dry stone walling more reminiscent of Derbyshire than the Mediterranean.

Menorca has avoided the impact of mass tourism. The island is just 48km long and 16km wide but still manages to maintain a real economy alongside tourism. It has industries that produce tangible goods, such as footwear, furniture, jewellery, and a delicious cheese that is one of Spain's finest. Menorcas conservation credentials are impeccable. Since Menorca became a by Unesco biosphere reserve in 1993, ecological values have topped the agenda. Planning rules are more closely followed than is normally the case in Spain. Today 41% of the island's 700 sq km enjoys some form of protection. Long stretches of coastline remain undeveloped. Resorts such as Cala Galdana and Cala en Porter are still surprisingly low key when compared to the Costa Blanca.

Menorca in winter is decidedly laid back but if you are willing to accept the ocassional bad weather and ignore the persistent north wind, the Tramuntana, Menorca has much to offer. The Museums are open the Prehistoric sites are still there in all their glory and when the weather has a settled periods you can find yourself alone on a glorious yet deserted beach. It as a unique charm that can easily get under your skin. However not all visitors are captivated by its charms.

The soul of the island may be in its geography. Nowhere in Spain is further from Madrid, except the Canary Islands.

The port of Maó is Spain's most easterly point, where the sun first rises. It has a stumpy, curving shape, with the outside edge facing France and the inside looking southwest towards Mallorca.

Menorca is not regarded as hilly but the gentle hills and deep valleys, known as barrancs, run down to secret coves.

The Menorcans say their beaches are the best in the Mediterranean, with which we could not argue. The Tramuntana which gives a huddling look to buildings and vegetation bends trees into stunted shapes.

During the summer the Island is well served by charter flights from virtually every major UK airport but these come to an end in late October the charters end. However through the winter months one can still reach Menorca with Monarch each Friday from Luton Airport or by using Avro the UK's cheap ticket operator.

The accommodation in the major resorts of Son Bou and Calen Porter closes but their is a wealth of good value lloc, traditional Menorcan farmhouses, which offer reasonably priced accommodation and some of the finestfood you can find on the entire Island of Menorca.

The most famous or these is BeinfCa Na Xini. This farm, outside the village of Ferreries, produces its own cheese, wine and olive oil. Sant Joan de Binissaida occupies a 12-hectare estate on the coast outside Maó. This 18th-century lloc has 12 rooms with original furniture, plus the restaurant serves some of the best food on the Island.

There are many tourist attractions around the island of Menorca, and many are just a short distance from the wonderful beaches and coves that are lapped by the wonderful blue waters of the Mediterranean.

Take a coastal tour of Menorca

Why not take a boat trip and tour the coast of Menorca? You can enjoy a cruise from the wonderful natural harbour in Mahon, the capital city of Menorca. You will come across the wonderful coastline of inlets, sea arches and rock formations in the turquoise waters, which are a joy to behold. The port harbour at Mahon is a place to check out and spend some time there - as it is such a historic place, being the centre of strategic military importance for generations. The architecture here is very British in appearance, this is due to the occupation here for nearly 200 years.

There are also glass bottom boat rides from Mahon, which will really enthrall adults and children alike!

Spend Time In Mahon, the Capital City

The wonderful town of Mahon has so much for the visitor to enjoy - so sit back and find out what there is to see in this charming destination!

· Check out the Fortress La Mola which was the Fortress of Isabel II and it is located to the north of Mahon Harbour, and was constructed over a 30 year period to 1875.

· There are wonderful Markets waiting to be explored at Mahon every Saturday and Tuesday. Local crafts and goods are for sale here. Other markets on the Island include Ciutadella on Fridays and Saturdays and Es Castlell on Monday and Wednesdays.

· Visit Mahon Cathedral (Santa Maria) at 11am very day except for Sundays in order to get a musical experience you will not forget! There are organ recitals here each day featuring the fantastic 19th century church organ that has over 2,300 pipes!

· Check out the well-preserved Arch de San Roque, which was once the key wall of defence for the city.

· Visit the Port and Waterfront - as aforementioned, the Mahon Port is a wonderful destination for taking a stroll through, or taking a boat trip from. A wander alongside this waterfront is thriving with activity, from the fishing boats, to the fascinating houses that are built into the cliff areas. Or simply browse at the fishing boats and yachts that glide in and out of the harbour!

· In Mahon there is a wonderful garden and park area called Es Freginal Park. The Summer Jazz Festival is always held here, and the park is used for cultural events and is well worth visiting.

· If you are exploring what Mahon has to offer why not check out the Xoriguer Distillery, which was built in the 18th century and was located along the Moll de Ponent harbour area. During your visit you will be astounded by the huge stills of copper that produce the world famous Balearic gin. You can check out other liquers that are produced in the wonderful distillery.

Take A Trip To Ciutadella

The ancient capital of Menorca will transport you back to times past - well worth seeing. The narrow streets and the 14th century cathedral are key points of tourist interest, along with the Placa Alfons III. This charming square is close to the Avda de la Constitucio. One of the most attractive things to see is the old windmill, which is now the site of the tourist information centre of Ciutadella.

Explore Cavalleria

The Cavalleria area is located to the west of Fornells and has been given special interest designation due to the fantastic archaeological remains that have been found there. Roman ruins, British towers, Muslim mosques and fishing shelters have been found there. The area is known as the first outdoor museum of Menorca. There are further excavations taking place in the area in order to learn more about Roman Menorca, and the city, which was called "Sanisera". You can find more Roman ruins at Castell de Santa Aqueda, containing an old cobbled road that is almost 2,000 years old!

Visit Mount Toro

No visit to Menorca is complete without visiting the highest point on the island. Mount Toro is located in the western region of the island, and at its highest point you get stunning views of the island, and even stretching as far as Majorca at times. Mount Toro is regarded as the spiritual centre of the island, as there is a 16th century Franciscan church located there. There is a memorial here for Menorcans who have perished in the fight for Spanish freedom. The mountain overlooks the traditional village of Es Mercadal which is located right in the centre of the island. The market in Es Mercadal is well worth looking for a bargain!

Menorca Guide

One of the very beautiful but lesser known places on the earth is Menorca - a Spanish island. It is a part of the Balearic Islands which is an archipelago. The name of the island is pretty literal in meaning - it means small. The island close to it, which is bigger than Menorca, is called Majorca! With sparse population of just close to 90,000 people, Menorca is a very peaceful island. Of recent, it has developed as a tourist attraction, thanks to the huge tourist flow that Spain attracts.

El Toro, which is the highest point in the island at about 30 meters, is one of the major attractions in the archipelago. The view from the top is simply awesome and fantastic. An island in the Mediterranean Sea, it witnesses a typical Mediterranean type of climate with sporadic climatic shifts to a surprisingly dry weather especially during the winters.

History of Menorca

History has never been far from Spain and same is the case with Menorca. Actually it was the historians and archaeologists who can be credited with advertising the island as a paradise for archaeologists. Minoans are known to have first graced the island who were themselves from a region known as Crete in the ancient times. Mediterranean culture has always been an influence in the island, in fact the whole of the Balearic archipelago. Interestingly, Menorca thrived on the loot by the pirates who inhabited the island! Until the Punic wars, Piracy was unknown, but shortly after piracy was a 'principal activity. It 'been a formidable track once the trade almost complete and the entire island has become a haven for pirates!

The main population is concentrated in the largest city of Mahon and the most important tourism and travel services. To enter the island from abroad, and the need to have permission to request the necessary visa from Spain and then follow with the works of paper in Mahon. A policy of liberalizationregarding tourism and tourists has opened up the economy such that tourism has become a main source for income on the islands. Other occupations are fishing and growing fruits in the higher altitude areas. The island was inhabited by almost fully Jewish population.

The island was identified as a biosphere reserve in the early 1990s with UNESCO giving the island, this status in 1993. Quite understandably, the island being a biosphere reserve has one of the most diverse vegetations that is observed in ocean nations having a Mediterranean type of climate. Development has largely been limited to tourism; office and commercial infrastructure is banned on the island owing to the sanctions imposed on it due to it being a biosphere reserve!

Culture

Menorca has culture which derives inspiration from Spanish as well as colonial cultures (because the island was a British territory in the early years). The most well known fiestas (or festivals) of Menorca are the International Opera Week and International Organ Festival in summer months. Ciutadella is a well known music festival held in the island. Beaches of Menorca

Menorca has some of the most stunning beaches in Spain. Most have mainly been untouched with ideal coves that are screened off by cliffs with undisturbed pine forests meeting the clear warm waters and golden sands. Menorca has the most beaches out of all the Balearic Islands; in fact it has more Beaches than all the other Balearic Islands put together. So it will be hard choosing where to stay when looking at Menorca Villas as the beach could be ideal for a holiday.

On the south coast of the island is the beach that is the most photographed resort on Menorca. The beach is called Cala Santa Galdana (mainly known as Cala Galdana everywhere else). East of Ciutadella and west Mahn, this is a beach that enjoys a wonderfully sheltered keyhole bay. This is probably the most popular beach on the island; it is certainly popular with British families although it does have a quiet atmosphere and peaceful surroundings.

Just a 20 minute from Cala Santa Galdana is the Cala Mitjana, you find this little unknown cove with its low white cliffs sheltered by pine trees. This beach offers ideal conditions for swimming and snorkelling; this is also a place which you can reserve so if you want a slice of Menorca and have money then you can make Cala Mitjana yours for a short period of time. You have to remember that these beaches are still in a natural state so it's best to come well prepared as there are no facilities.

Es Grau is a stunning horseshoe bay which has golden sands that are baked by sand dunes that lead into shady pine forests. This is a beach that is located near to a natural wetland reserve of Albufera, where you will find various wild birds. Here you find boat trips available that go to the little islet of Colom a place with even more secluded sands can be found. Es Grau can be found on the east side of the island and is only a short drive away from the capital.

Son Bou is a long beach that is littered with sand dunes, features freshwater marshes that are filled with ducks and a lagoon nearby. This beach has excellent water sports facilities that are available to everyone but you have to be careful and check if the conditions are right for swimming and doing various other activities as it can be dangerous at times. Son Bou is located to the west of the island, just to the south of Alaior. This is a beach that has a dedicated area for nude sun bathers so if you're a free spirit it can cater to your needs. Also keep an eye out for the caves on the way to Son Bou as these have provided shelter to people for hundreds if not thousands of years.

There are other beaches such as Cala Pregonda, Cala d'Algaiarens and Cala en Turqueta that each have their own quirks that will be of interest of you these are just examples of the brilliant beaches on this islands.
