Top Attractions in Menorca

There are many tourist attractions around the island of Menorca, and many are just a short distance from the wonderful beaches and coves that are lapped by the wonderful blue waters of the Mediterranean.

Take a coastal tour of Menorca

Why not take a boat trip and tour the coast of Menorca? You can enjoy a cruise from the wonderful natural harbour in Mahon, the capital city of Menorca. You will come across the wonderful coastline of inlets, sea arches and rock formations in the turquoise waters, which are a joy to behold. The port harbour at Mahon is a place to check out and spend some time there - as it is such a historic place, being the centre of strategic military importance for generations. The architecture here is very British in appearance, this is due to the occupation here for nearly 200 years.

There are also glass bottom boat rides from Mahon, which will really enthrall adults and children alike!

Spend Time In Mahon, the Capital City

The wonderful town of Mahon has so much for the visitor to enjoy - so sit back and find out what there is to see in this charming destination!

· Check out the Fortress La Mola which was the Fortress of Isabel II and it is located to the north of Mahon Harbour, and was constructed over a 30 year period to 1875.

· There are wonderful Markets waiting to be explored at Mahon every Saturday and Tuesday. Local crafts and goods are for sale here. Other markets on the Island include Ciutadella on Fridays and Saturdays and Es Castlell on Monday and Wednesdays.

· Visit Mahon Cathedral (Santa Maria) at 11am very day except for Sundays in order to get a musical experience you will not forget! There are organ recitals here each day featuring the fantastic 19th century church organ that has over 2,300 pipes!

· Check out the well-preserved Arch de San Roque, which was once the key wall of defence for the city.

· Visit the Port and Waterfront - as aforementioned, the Mahon Port is a wonderful destination for taking a stroll through, or taking a boat trip from. A wander alongside this waterfront is thriving with activity, from the fishing boats, to the fascinating houses that are built into the cliff areas. Or simply browse at the fishing boats and yachts that glide in and out of the harbour!

· In Mahon there is a wonderful garden and park area called Es Freginal Park. The Summer Jazz Festival is always held here, and the park is used for cultural events and is well worth visiting.

· If you are exploring what Mahon has to offer why not check out the Xoriguer Distillery, which was built in the 18th century and was located along the Moll de Ponent harbour area. During your visit you will be astounded by the huge stills of copper that produce the world famous Balearic gin. You can check out other liquers that are produced in the wonderful distillery.

Take A Trip To Ciutadella

The ancient capital of Menorca will transport you back to times past - well worth seeing. The narrow streets and the 14th century cathedral are key points of tourist interest, along with the Placa Alfons III. This charming square is close to the Avda de la Constitucio. One of the most attractive things to see is the old windmill, which is now the site of the tourist information centre of Ciutadella.

Explore Cavalleria

The Cavalleria area is located to the west of Fornells and has been given special interest designation due to the fantastic archaeological remains that have been found there. Roman ruins, British towers, Muslim mosques and fishing shelters have been found there. The area is known as the first outdoor museum of Menorca. There are further excavations taking place in the area in order to learn more about Roman Menorca, and the city, which was called "Sanisera". You can find more Roman ruins at Castell de Santa Aqueda, containing an old cobbled road that is almost 2,000 years old!

Visit Mount Toro

No visit to Menorca is complete without visiting the highest point on the island. Mount Toro is located in the western region of the island, and at its highest point you get stunning views of the island, and even stretching as far as Majorca at times. Mount Toro is regarded as the spiritual centre of the island, as there is a 16th century Franciscan church located there. There is a memorial here for Menorcans who have perished in the fight for Spanish freedom. The mountain overlooks the traditional village of Es Mercadal which is located right in the centre of the island. The market in Es Mercadal is well worth looking for a bargain!
